A little addendum to my prior post.... I put a second row of stitching about an inch below the original baste to hold the pleats in place. This made the pleats "crisper" as they folded over the edge of the box springs. And I fitted the skirt to my bed before if stitched the final pleat (and I chose the center one) in order to make any necessary adjustments. I still think this is the niftiest idea ever!

Love love love this! The finished product hangs so beautifully with no slipping and sliding everywhere and it was SO much easier than sewing to a base. I do have a slight disagreement with the fabric amounts. I used a 54" decorator fabric, and cut five 24" segments for a total of 120" or 3 1/3 yards. I purchased just a few extra inches just to be on the safe side. My fabric did not have a repeat pattern so you would need to take that into consideration. Anyway, thanks for the help. My next project is an upholstered headboard in a companion fabric.
