Bunnies Aren’t Just for Easter

The Easter Bunny has come and gone. All of the eggs have been found and the chocolate devoured. And now you are thinking about boxing up all of your cute bunny decorations and not thinking about them again for another year.

Well, I won’t be packing up any of my bunny decorations.

It’s time for a confession: I collected rabbit- themed decor when I was growing up. Kind of a weird thing to collect as a kid, huh? I honestly don’t know how it got started, but my parents often gave me at least one bunny-themed gift for my birthday and at Christmas. I wasn’t out of control about it (I think I must have saved that for my ridiculous New Kids on the Block obsession). I don’t think that people around town called me the “Rabbit Girl” or anything like that, but I’ve always had a love for little bunnies.

Luckily, my mother had great taste and my collection revolved around antique and classic rabbits. I had an adorable set of Peter Rabbit stuffed animals (unfortunately, they were damaged in a flood in my parent’s storage space when I was in college). I have a beautiful set of Arthur Court silver rabbit serving pieces and picture frames. I have the adorable little antique “cotton tail” bunny I shared with you a few weeks ago.

I absolutely love using bunnies in my decor. So before you get out that box to start packing up your Easter decorations, I want to encourage you to consider using antique and vintage-inspired rabbits in your home year around, too. Of course, you need to steer clear of rabbits carrying baskets of Easter eggs and those holding signs that say, “Happy Easter,” but pretty much any neutral rabbit-themed decor can be mixed into your current design scheme.

I know many of you picked up the adorable “Bunnies on a Stick” from Pier 1 this year. I grabbed two. Don’t pack them away! Display them in a floral arrangement.

Or find an interesting vessel, add floral foam and moss, and let the little bunny enjoy basking in the sun.

You know those cute chocolate-looking bunnies from Big Lots? Coat them with some white spray paint and use them in a favorite vignette. You could even do the same with some of your Easter-colored rabbits. White spray paint solves most decorating problems!

Leave the bunnies out year around and incorporate them into other seasonal displays, such as Christmas.

Not yet convinced that rabbits belong in your everyday decor? Take a look at these cute rabbits and imagine how great they would look in your home.

This one was snapped up before I even saw it on Etsy. It so would have been living in my house if I would have found it earlier, because it is absolute perfection:

This delightful little bunny holding a floral vase is SUCH a bargain at $5.25:

This bunny would look adorable anywhere you put him, but imagine him displayed with the green Bordallo dishes:

And I just had to include this photo of an army of vintage garden bunnies from SC Fiasco’s Flickr stream. I would love to own just one of them:

Inspired? Good! Right now is a great time to find a few new rabbit friends, because markdowns on Easter decor in most home stores and antique shops begin today. I’m going hunting on Tuesday!

So let me know…are you now planning on leaving some bunnies out of that Easter decor box or finding a few new goodies?

You must have read my mind! I was sitting in my living room last night thinking about how I’d have to pack up all the Easter decor today. Now I’m inspired to keep out some of my bunnies! I think most of mine are definitely Easter-themed, but what do you think about the ones that have Eastery-Springy colors (like little garlands) with them? Would those be okay to leave out for as Springtime decorations for a bit?

Sometimes you can use spray paint on something like that to change the feel. Use an appropriate primer/paint to fit the material and then change the color to be less “Easter”. White or black is always a classy neutral.

Wow, great tips! I, unfortunately don’t have any bunnies to leave out (gasp!), but I’ll be looking for them, maybe they’re on sale right now!

Amanda- I’d think if the Spring colors of the garlands blend well with your decor, you could definitely leave them out for a while. If they have springy flowers on them, I’d take them down for the fall and winter, but otherwise, I’m sure they’d be great!

To display said bunnies, means I would have to have said bunnies…

Very cute idea Linds…

Perhaps in the next year, I can start decorating…now that Angry Toddler isn’t destroying my house.

Very cute! Leaving most of the decorations out after Easter for Spring is one of the things I love about this time of year.
Thanks for sharing!

I also love bunnies. I’m thinking about purchasing this for my sister who also collects bunnies. http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-HAMMERSLEY-PINK-EASTER-RABBIT-COTTON-BALL-BUNNY_W0QQitemZ230335380858QQcmdZViewItem

My bunnies stay out year round too! They get red bows at Christmas, pink in the summer, pumpkins in the fall! I could not bear to pack them away!

Great post!

Great idea, buying the bunnies on sale after the holiday. I think I will have a look for a few ‘stays’.

Good for you, fighting on behalf of all those bunnies who don’t want to go back into the closet.

I had to laugh at your NKOTB comment. I have a friend (a GROWN UP friend) who has been to several of their concerts on the current tour. She cracks me up.

Oh girl, I've been a bunny lover for a few years now & yes, they live at my house all year too. I have them all over the place & really have to love one now to bring another one home. They just captured my heart!

Wow! You had such good taste. Those bunnies definitely could be left up all year round as you have. Beautiful pictures!

Funny you should ask. I was at a friend’s last night and she had a gorgeous floral arrangement that featured a moss bunny in the middle. She had just gotten it- after Easter- to use on her front porch. That was my first inkling that bunnies make great year-round decor, but I’m thoroughly convinced after reading your blog today!!

I’m late coming to blog-dom but would like to comment just the same.
For me it’s cats. For a long time it was any cat and that soon got out of control. Then I decided on just black cats (I had one at that time who allowed me to share his home). There is still a certain stigma against black cats so generally decorative black cats are only available around Halloween. That’s OK with me though it doesn’t stop me from looking year round. Also, if I find another type of decorative cat that somehow makes it’s way into my shopping basket I don’t argue too strenuously!!! :-)
I really, really like the last picture of the flock/batch/crowd/herd(?) of bunnies. Wow!
