Welcome to Teach Me Tuesday! I spend a lot of time each week reading all of the great DIY tips out there in Blogland. Because there are so many fabulous projects that I can’t wait to try, I figured that it would be fun to feature some of my very favorites here each Tuesday.
If you would like to be featured in an upcoming edition of Teach Me Tuesday, please email me at LivingWithLindsay@gmail.com and we’ll chat!
This weeks edition of Teach Me Tuesday comes from Kris at JesseKate Designs. Kris is a multi-talented mom, designer, embroider, crafter, super woman extraordinaire! How she finds time to manage SWAKEmbroidery.com, help run YouCanMakeThis.com, do fun projects with her kiddos, and still have time to blog is beyond me.
Kris recently posted an adorable idea on growing a “High Five” garden with your kids. I immediately fell in love and knew I had to share it with you here. Once you see this idea, you will know exactly why it is named the “High Five” garden.
Kris explains:
It’s planting time and if you haven’t already begun your garden, or are not planning on doing one, here’s an easy activity that will not only help your children learn more about gardening on a small scale, but will also be fun for the family nonetheless! Perfect time to share this as Earth Day was just celebrated!Materials:
Disposable, plastic, clear kitchen glove
Cotton balls
Seeds of different varietiesWhat You Do:
1. With a permanent marker, write on each “finger” of the glove what you will be planting. We decided to plant carrots, beans, squash, zuchinni, and lettuce!
2. With a small bowl of water nearby, have the kids each dip one cottonball into the water.
3. Gently squeeze out the excess water.
4. Sprinkle some seeds onto a plate and have each child “collect” several seeds by pressing their soaked cottonball onto the plate.

5. Place cottonball into the cooresponding finger of the glove.
6. Repeat these steps for each new seed.
Once all 5 fingers have been filled with seeds, tape shut and hang from a sunny window!
They’ll look kind of funny hanging from your window, but the kids will sure get a kick out of it! The seeds will begin to germinate in just a few short days. Oh, I can’t wait to see their faces when that happens! I’ll be sure to take a picture or two of the gloves sometime next week!
I first learned about this idea from Ag in the Classroom several years ago while teaching. They have some great follow-up lessons to go along with it if you wanted to take this activity a bit further!
Once they begin to germinate, clip off the ends and go ahead and plant in the backyard! And the best part is, that oftentimes I can get my pickiest eaters in my family to try some new vegetables when they actually grow them on their own and see the entire process from start to finish. They will take great pride in their little gardens and be very curious to how their produce ends up tasting!
I loved this idea so much, that Zack and I started our own little garden last week. I decided to plant an herb garden, since I wasn’t born with with plant growing gene. We planted dill, oregano, basil and rosemary. I didn’t have any clear plastic kitchen gloves handy, so we planted our garden in plastic snack-sized baggies.

We planted it on Thursday and the seeds are sprouted and almost ready to be planted! We’ll be putting them in containers on our back patio, so I’ll keep you updated on how it turns out. I am so excited about this, and I had as much fun as Zack has had watching the seeds sprout.
Thanks to Kris for sharing this adorable idea with us! Be sure to check out JesseKate Designs. And PSSST…she has a Mother’s Day giveaway over there that ends today, so hurry over there and sign up!

This is a really great idea! I’m really impressed
What a great gardening idea. We might have to try this, my kids love planting, but we do have that “everything dies” problem.

Very cute idea. Love it!
Such a good idea! I love that this way they can see the seeds sprouting and still be able to plant them.
We learned about this last year at our local children’s museum. This year we planted 12 gloves and had tons of sprouts to start our gardening. I also started some seeds in the little dirt pots. Amazingly enough the seeds in the gloves sprouted and grew better than the ones in the dirt. My kids love doing them and we had so much fun watching them grow. So far our best growing seeds have been Lima Beans, corn, sunflower and pumpkin.
Cute idea. Did your rosemary sprout, too? I tried to grow it from seed a couple of years ago (in dirt) with no success. Then I read that rosemary is hard to start from seed – so I just bought plants last year. If it sprouted for you – I’ll try it this way next time.
I LOVELOVELOVE this! What a cute idea! I’ll def. be doin’ this next year with my class. I am thinking that in early spring we will use flower seeds and then plant the seedlings in decorated pots for Mother’s Day gifts!
Oh my – that is just too cute. I recently found your blog after having heard about it for so long….yea…I am so thrilled I jumped out of my reader to find you, and now will add you to it as well.
Oh, my gosh, I’ve never seen anyone do this before! What a cute idea. I’ve got to show my husband this project–we call him “Farmer Dave” because there’s nothing he loves more than spending time in his garden, and there are always little seedlings growing in the kitchen by the window.
I LOVED this post!
That’s one of the cutest gardening ideas ever! Love it!

What a great idea, I’ve never seen this before! I wish I had a garden of my own to plant- but till then I have small container gardens for now.
