Welcome to Teach Me Tuesday! I spend a lot of time each week reading all of the great DIY tips out there in Blogland. Because there are so many fabulous projects that I can’t wait to try, I figured that it would be fun to feature some of my very favorites here each Tuesday.
If you would like to be featured in an upcoming edition of Teach Me Tuesday, please email me at LivingWithLindsay@gmail.com and we’ll chat!
I’m doing something a little different for this week’s Teach Me Tuesday. Instead of featuring one of the great bloggers out there, I am going to feature another site – Sunset Magazine. Although I’ve never actually picked up a copy of Sunset, I’ve been obsessed with their website for months! In fact, one of my very first projects – the toile covered headboard – was inspired by their site.
There is so much great DIY, gardening, cooking, and travel information on their website that you could literally spend hours pouring over it. Recently, they posted a series on repurposing – Reinvent Your Stuff : 20 fun DIY projects. Not only are these projects fantastic, but they show you how to use the things you already own in a different way. Free (or cheap) projects are definitely right up my alley.
Below I’m going to highlight a few of my favorite projects, but you should definitely checkout the website to see all twenty projects.
From Sunset Magazine:
Scrap wood becomes fence shadow box
Make display frames out of wood remnants and celebrate small plants as living art.
Picture frame becomes memory box
A deep photo frame and similar sized side table become a venue for celebrating treasured keepsakes. Find the tutorial here.
Drawer organizer becomes bento-box guest tray
Tuck a drawer organizer into a storage tote with some thoughtful amenities to make your houseguests feel like royalty. (Be forewarned: They’ll be eager for a return invite.)
How-to: Slip a drawer organizer into a fabric-covered box or other storage tote and stock it with a few travel-size essentials in coordinating materials and hues. Tie a washcloth with colorful string; wrap a bar of soap with wide ribbon; use letter stamps and a label sticker to personalize a scented candle.
Industrial light fixture becomes chic pot
Think outside definition: Unwanted light fixtures (and other vessels) can become plant vessels with a contemporary edge.Tips:
- Be sure your object can sit upright (flat bottom).
- Because there’s no drainage hole, we recommend using plants that don’t demand much water.
- No such containers around your house? Try salvage yards for your own vessel to repurpose.
Aren’t those fantastic little projects? I definitely want to do work on a few of those for my home.
Do you subscribe to Sunset magazine? Is it as wonderful as the website? Tell me about it!

Those projects are so lovely and original! I always love hearing about new DIY inspiration…
I like the light fixture plant holder idea. I always see the prettiest pieces over at our 2nd hand store…this is the perfect way to show them off. Happy July ~Natalie
Great project ideas! Thanks for sharing! My favorite is the shadowbox table–would be fun to fill with shells in a beach house!
Oh yes, I love Sunset (as you know, ha, I'm always finding some little nifty idea there!)…
