Teach Me Tuesday: Concealing Eyesores in Your Home

in Easy Home Decor Projects

Welcome to Teach Me Tuesday! I spend a lot of time each week reading all of the great DIY tips out there in Blogland. Because there are so many fabulous projects that I can’t wait to try, I figured that it would be fun to feature some of my very favorites here each Tuesday.

If you would like to be featured in an upcoming edition of Teach Me Tuesday, please email me at LivingWithLindsay@gmail.com and we’ll chat!

Today’s edition of Teach Me Tuesday comes from Jane at Decor Mamma! Jane has some really adorable projects on her site, including a bright green desk and a serious love affair with spray paint.

However, as soon as I read her latest post, I immediately emailed her to tell her that it was genius! I love it, and I know you will, too.

Jane has one of those ugly breaker boxes on a prominent wall in her home. Gah! The nerve of that builder. We actually have one inside, too, but its in our master closet and at least it’s concealed by our hanging clothing.

Instead of choosing to ignore the box, Jane chose to conceal it. She explains:

If you haven’t tried Chalk Board Paint yet, chances are you’ve got a fun project in your house just waiting to be tackled.

In my case, we had an ugly breaker box right in the middle of our mud room. To say it was an eye sore is a total understatement! It was very large and very metal and looked like it should be in our garage instead of in the house.

Thankfully the previous owners did half the work by building a frame around this box and putting a unique piece of artwork inside. The only problem was…I didn’t like the color of the frame or the artwork. It had a redwood frame and a French Bistro picture…it just wasn’t my style.

So the solution was to paint the frame black, and paint the artwork inside the frame with Chalk Board paint!

Here it is! This Chalk Board (with the ugly breaker box inside) now points the way to our favorite little room in the house…our small Wine Room!

I love taking something uninspiring, and reinventing it into something creative, new and fun! What projects can you do around the house with Chalk Board Paint?

Seriously? Genius, people. You don’t even need a piece of artwork to paint. All you need to do is paint a piece of wood with the chalkboard paint and frame it in cheap moulding from Home Depot.

And if you had a Wine Room, wouldn’t you have a sign that pointed your way there? I totally would. Jane, you need to tell us more about your little room!

Think about any eyesores you may have in your home. There are solutions all around you! You just need to think outside of the box a bit. Let us know in the comments if there is anything in your home you are having trouble concealing, and either myself or one of the awesome readers may be able to help.

Great solution, and she is a good artist too. :) How cool to have a wine room!!! I have a laundry room, except I guess that's not really the same, is it? ;)

My dream is that someday God will bless me with a big enough house to have my very own wine room. Is it wrong to pray for it every day? {smirk}

I have two little spots that are probably an easy fix, but I can't decide what to do…one is my patio door, complete with mini blinds. Yuck! I put pictures on my blog.

p.s. I'm a little nervous…I'm new at this! :)

I am totally going to start storing wine in my laundry room. And I can think of about 100 things I want to paint with chalkboard paint. Now if school would just START ALREADY!

Here's the comment I posted on Melissa's blog about her eyesores she posted above:

"Hi Melissa!

I actually had a valence on the window on my door and it looked great. It started falling down (um, because I hung it up with hot glue HA!) I'll have to dig and see if I can find some pics for you. I didn't hang it across the outside of the door frame like the photo Donora showed; instead, I hung it entirely on the door itself – on the outside of the window. I'm sure that makes no sense at all. Also, I'm not sure what your door is made from, but if it's metal door, they make magnetic rods so that you wouldn't even have to damage the door.

Another thing you could do is hang a rod across the top of the door and have a curtain panel on either side of the door. They'd be stationary, but I think they'd take away from the mini-blinds and I bet you wouldn't mind them so much! You might be able to get away with buying panel or width of decorator fabric and cutting it in half lengthwise since you have such a small area to work with on both sides.

Do you use the stuff in your bookcase very often or only when you want to grab a movie or something? The reason I ask is that I think you should slipcover it! You sew, right? You could do an easy tailored slip cover to just go over the top of out. I'd even use a white or off-white fabric in a linen or linen-look and then applique your family initial on the front. I think that would be adorable!

Good luck, and definitely let us know what you come up with!"
