Teach Me Tuesday: Dressing Up Drop Cloth Drapes

Welcome to Teach Me Tuesday! I spend a lot of time each week reading all of the great DIY tips out there in Blogland. Because there are so many fabulous projects that I can’t wait to try, I figured that it would be fun to feature some of my very favorites here each Tuesday.

If you would like to be featured in an upcoming edition of Teach Me Tuesday, please email me at LivingWithLindsay@gmail.com and we’ll chat!

Yesterday, I showed you my new drop cloth drapes and bamboo placemat valences. I love how the placemats valences dress up the windows. I’m pretty pleased with myself, so I’m afraid you may be hearing a lot about said valences. I’m apologizing in advance.

I really love taking something very basic and customizing it to fit my decor. Judy over at Gracious Southern Living does, too. Her updated drop cloth drapes were what made me decide that I really was okay with hanging drop clothes in my dining room. Judy, you are my inspiration. :)

Check out Judy’s lovely window treatments:

Since my re-do of my dining room I’ve been in a dilemma about what to do about window treatments. I got some great suggestions from blogland and all of them were helpful. Of course, as always, budget was a factor but I didn’t want to “make do” or “settle” and be unhappy. I even bought a pair of gorgeous triple-width, lined and weighted silk drapes, hubby hung them, but they didn’t feel right. So down they came and back to the store they went.

After seeing how others have used the drop cloths as drapes, I thought, why not? I’d only be out of about $20 for a pair of them and I can customize them for my decor. So off to Lowe’s I went for my 6×9 drop cloths at about $9.00 a piece. I also replaced the “fat” curtain rod originally used at that window with a nice skinny black one. There was nothing to hanging them once the rod was installed, just used about 10 clip rings per panel and clipped the panels to those rings. While they looked good “plain” I wanted them to have a little more style so I bought a full size flat black sheet to use as a border. In the end, I cut about 30” off the drop cloths, made a 20” border for the bottom, and sewed them together. I didn’t even sew a hem but used good old stitchy witchy for the bottom and sides of the border. Since my sisal rug has a black border, I wanted to use black as the accent on the drapes. When hubby got home, he was real impressed, not to mention the total cost for this pair of window treatments ran me about $28.

Tell me what you think of my customized drop cloth drapes….

Oh, Judy. I could just stare at these pictures all day long. How fabulous! The black flat sheet (LOVE THAT!) is the perfect accessory to dress up those drop cloths. No one would ever know your window treatments were just drop cloths and a sheet.

Please visit Judy over at Gracious Southern Living to see what other wonderful things she has come up with. This project makes my heart flutter. I’m absolutely loving her blog, y’all.

Thank you so much Lindsay for featuring my drapes. This was such an easy project and I plan on using more drop cloths on other projects. I'll let you know just as soon as that gets done!

Cute! We have drop cloth drapes in our living room. I'm having issues with them.

One: They're wrinkled. I can't get the wrinkles out and I don't iron.
Two: I need to hem the edge.
Three: I'm too lazy to do #1 or #2. LOL

Gorgeousness in the extreme. Thanks for featuring Judy's drapes…I just hung some in my living/reading room and I dig the texture and color as I'm really into neutrals lately. Adding a black band would still keep it neutral, eh?
If you're into handmade soap, I'm having my first every giveaway!

Those are really nice! I love how the black pull in the border from the rug. I made some similar drapes for my son's room out of Target curtain panels and a flat sheet from WalMart. Sheets make perfect drapes, don't they

I love these drapes! I've been wanting to put some in my living and dining room, but there are heat registers beneath every single window. I wanted to do some with a puddle, but I don't think there's any way without blocking the vents. What length should I do??
