Teach Me Tuesday: Easy Scrap Fabric Valentine’s Wreath

by Lindsay on January 5, 2010

in Easy Home Decor Projects

Welcome to Teach Me Tuesday! I spend a lot of time each week reading all of the great DIY tips out there in Blogland. Because there are so many fabulous projects that I can’t wait to try, I figured that it would be fun to feature some of my very favorites here each Tuesday.

If you have a home decor tutorial that you would like to be featured in an upcoming edition of Teach Me Tuesday, please email me at LivingWithLindsay@gmail.com!

When I came across this fun tutorial for an easy scrappy fabric Valentine’s wreath, I wanted to stop what I was doing and immediately make one (I have an unhealthy obsession with wreaths). Then, I realized you’d probably want to make one, too!
The wonderful gals at Little Birdie Secrets (Stacy, Mandy, and Jessica) have graciously let me feature this great project as the first Teach Me Tuesday of 2010. They actually created this project last year, but I thought it was just too fun to pass up.
The Birdies explain:
Just a little more than a month until Valentine’s Day, so here’s our first Valentine for you. This easy heart wreath is a fun project you can do with your kids (and a good way to use up your fabric scraps!).
Scrappy Heart Wreath Tutorial
What you’ll need:
*Scraps of fabric cut into 2 inch squares (these can be all the same fabric or a combination of different fabrics)
*Elmers glue or Tacky Glue
*Styrofoam Heart (Lindsay note: I know JoAnn has these right now for about $4 – Take your 40% off coupon!)
*Pencil
*Ribbon (enough to hang your wreath where you want it)
Okay, let’s get started!
1. Fill a shallow paper bowl with glue.
2. Place fabric square on pencil tip with right-side facing the pencil. Be sure the pencil tip is in the center.
3. Dip the fabric covered pencil tip into the glue. You don’t need too much. Just a little on the end.
4. Press the pencil tip into the Styrofoam.
5. Remove the pencil–your fabric should stay in place.
6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 until your heart is completely covered.
It should look nice and full like this.
7. Add a ribbon and hang up. We tied a small loop around the finished wreath with string, then threaded the ribbon through that.

Isn’t it sweet?
It is oh, so sweet! I personally have tons of Valentine-themed fat quarters that I was going to use for a project several years ago and never got around to sewing. They are all from the same collection, so I think I will use a mix of them to complete my wreath. Squeal! I’m so excited.
Doesn’t this look like a fun one?

This is really nice! I have no fabric scraps, approx. how much fabric would it take? Also, do you think it could be hung outside? I would really like to make one for our front door. Thanks!

PS The comment section for the original post says that it takes 3/4 yard of fabric, to answer Jane's first question.

too cute! Definatly going to be making this one. I've been mia from blogworld for a couple of months, so I have been catching up today.

Quick question: What kind of table (the white one) is that behind you (bow video)in your craft room? I found a table that LOOKS to be the same one in a thrift shop a few months back. It folds open on both sides, and has a drawer on one end. I *think* it is suppossed to have drawers on both ends though.

The reason I'm asking, is if it's the same table, I may need to ask a couple of measurment questions of you. Mine was only like $9, so I got it, but it's in need of some tlc, and has some missing/broken places.

Let me know!

This is a really cute wreath, I think I would like it in a couple different fabrics. I still think your book wreath is the nicest wreath ever, I tried to make it and it looked so bad!! I'll have to try again but I tried with a hardcover book…you definately need a soft cover book, the paper was too hard, it looked terrible!! Oh well you cant win them all! Id show you a picture but its actually embarrassing. Just know I have total wreath envy! lol

This is so fun! I purchased everything yesterday as my fabric stash had nothing that was "just right". I made my squares 1 1/2" because reading the directions and remembering them is too tough for me :0) It is turning out so cute! And not taking nearly as long as I thought.

What a great project! I found the heart-shaped form at JoAnn's (as you said) and also got a red fabric remnant there at 1/2 price. Found great red ribbon at Dollar Tree to finish it off. Thanks for posting this project – my door was really bare after Christmas too. Here's a pic of my wreath: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3434861&l;=0a3a6fe35b&id;=615282290
