About a month ago, I sent my mother-in-law a link to a sweet little project I found online. She had recently retired and loves to garden, so I thought it would be something fun for her to work on.
I have apparently been living under a rock, because I had no idea that these lovely little Fairy Gardens were actually a “thing.” Once I began looking into it more, I found all sorts of darling new worlds.
Sure, those of you Fairy Garden connoisseurs can go ahead and laugh at me, but I bet I’m not alone in not knowing about these lovely little container gardens. You can plant them in containers indoors or outdoors.
There are all sorts of online shops (and local gardening shops, depending upon where you live) that sell little garden gates, houses, animals, and fairies to populate your new world. There’s a great tutorial here.
So, back to my mother-in-law…She and my father-in-law came in town over Easter weekend to visit with the family. She told me before they arrived that she had some things to bring for a little project to work on with 5 year-old Zack. After a visit to our favorite local gardening store for a container, some herbs, and moss, this is what they created:
Isn’t that so cute? I put it on our kitchen table so we would see it every day. I pulled up some online fairy garden shops to show Zack, and he’s already picked out some new items he wants to add to our next one.

When we go to our neighborhood nursery, my kiddos go straight to the fairy gardens! Yours looks so cute!
ooh, how cute. I didn’t know this was a ‘thing’ either. You’re not alone. I have noticed the whole terrarium trend though. Have you seen this ‘thing’. It’s basically mini fairy gardens, but planted in enclosed glass jars. People even recreate events from their own life. Rachel Ray had it in her magazine this past month.

Awww, when I saw the pictures I thought there was going to be a link to where you could buy them. My aunt’s birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and it would be the perfect gift. Not so much if you have to build it yourself! I’m crafty, but I’m no green thumb.

I saw fairy gardens in a magazine a couple of years back, but didn’t follow up on creating one. I know my girls would love it!!
Honestly? I could have done without looking at this one because now I must have one hahahahahaha

I am loving these sweet gardens!I made a little gnome garden in one of my bird cages last year and it made me smile every time my eyes rested on it’s sweetness. I have a little white table and chair set and it looks like I know what I’m doing with it now!!

Our resident 5 yr old would enjoy a project like that too….however, the 2 yr old would likely not be able to keep his mits off the cute toys once positioned!
I love fairy gardens. Too bad my boys think they’re more fit for GI Joes and mud puddles then leaving them be. But anything in miniature is too stinkin’ cute.
