3 fun outdoor activities you can enjoy as a family

Over the past year we’ve all had a lot of spare time on our hands, which has meant we’ve been lucky enough to spend more quality time with our family than what we normally would. With numerous lockdowns resulting in shops, leisure facilities and attractions having to close their doors, it has meant that many families have had to improvise and create their own fun in the great outdoors.

For the majority of people, we have been able to appreciate our surroundings and enjoy the breadth of nature and wildlife the UK has to offer. With this in mind, it’s important that exploring and having fun outdoors doesn’t get forgotten about once life gets back to normal.

There can be many ways to enjoy the outdoors, even in your own backyard, such as adding a small summerhouse. These structures are perfect for even a tiny garden, offering a more cozy retreat where the whole family can relax and enjoy nature. Whether you use it for reading, playing games, or simply relaxing, a summerhouse can become a treasured part of your outdoor experience. Additionally, you can also set up a small vegetable garden that can be a rewarding activity to teach children about nature and responsibility..

With the warmer weather and lighter nights just around the corner and many families looking forward to exploring their local area once again, Regatta have launched a campaign which provides you with the perfect outdoor activities to enjoy as a family. We thought Regatta’s campaign was a really good idea and because of this, we wanted to share some of our own ideas with you.

Create your own nature trail

Sometimes it can be hard to make yourself feel energised and get outdoors and it can be even harder to motivate your children to do the same. A great way to get the whole family outside is to create your own nature trail, as this will be fun for the children, as well as making sure the whole family is getting their daily exercise.

Ask your children to pick their favourite park or woodland and create a list of things you want to search for. It could be anything from flowers to bugs and don’t be afraid to let your kids get messy and enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer.

Stargaze in your garden

You don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to enjoy the outdoors, as a back garden is just as good; plus, you may have recently had someone like a vinyl fence contractor come out and install a new fence, so now you’re thinking of as many excuses as possible to get out into the garden! Children love the idea of camping and astronomy, so why not use the good weather to your advantage and camp in your garden and stargaze?

If camping isn’t for you, then another option is to place blankets and cushions on the floor and enjoy a family BBQ whilst the sun sets. Not only will the children love the idea of being outdoors and watching the stars above, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to spend time together. However, before you plan anything of a similar nature, it would be great to get your garden thoroughly cleaned. The sight of overgrown weeds and fungi-ladder tree branches might not be pleasant. You definitely do not want to get bitten by any insect or get a fungi-caused allergy. Hire a professional who can clean the weeds out and offer Tree Trimming. Once this is done, you are almost set to enjoy your time. Note that the word “almost” has been mentioned, primarily because you may need to work a bit more on your garden, especially if you are an extremely private person.

If you are someone who wants to spend uninterrupted quality time with your family members, then outdoor screens could just be the thing for you. You can add them on top of fence panels for that extra bit of privacy. Besides their practical application, they can also be used as decoration. A silhouetted tree metal garden screen would be stunningly eye-catching in this regard. But it is more than just a pretty pattern. The screen’s mirror backing can essentially reflect colors and images from your garden and its surroundings, which will create the effect of a larger space.

Create a woodland den

There’s nothing more fun for children than creating a den. You’ll often find them in their bedroom trying to use their imagination and objects to create a hiding space, so why not transfer this idea to the outdoors?

Across the UK there are an abundance of forests and woodlands which are waiting to be explored and there’s no better place to create a den than in these places. By simply taking a picnic and finding sticks and branches, the whole family will have hours of fun trying to construct a hiding place.

There are so many exciting activities you and your family can enjoy outdoors and it doesn’t have to come at a cost. It would be great to know if you have tried any of the activities I have mentioned or if you have any of your own. Share them on social, using #OurGreenSpace.
