Four faces of London Fashion Week

Milan may be the most glamorous fashion week and New York may claim to be the most prestigious. However, there is no denying that London Fashion Week has its own unique attributes and is no less prestigious than any other fashion event.

London now hosts 72 catwalk shows and attracts more than 250 famous designers from around the globe. It also brings in £269m income to the capital every year, which is a far higher number than Paris’ £58m and Milan’s £44.6m.

The famous clothing trade show has also launched the careers of some of the biggest names in the industry. For example, John Galliano (five-time British Fashion Designer of the Year) made his debut at the event by showing his graduate collection Les Incroyables.

1- Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell is one of the biggest stars in the fashion world who dominated the runway during the late 1980s, the 1990s, and even the earlier 2000s. She was born in Streatham, South London in 1970, and on reaching the age of 10, attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts to study ballet.

And while studying at the performing arts educational institution, she was spotted by Beth Boldt, head of the Synchro Model Agency. After signing with the agency, the English model’s career immediately took off and it wasn’t long before she appeared on the cover of British Elle.

2- Kate Moss

Kate Moss was named as one of the world’s 100 most influential people by Time in 2007. The Croydon-born model also received an award at the 2013 British Fashion Awards.

She was 14 when she was discovered by Storm Models founder Sarah Doukas in 1988. With her incredibly thin, boyish body, Moss rose to fame as the anti-supermodel of the 1990s in contrast to models like Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell.

The English model has the distinction of appearing on the cover of more than 300 magazines. She is also one of the world’s richest working models, with her earnings said to be more than $9m per year, which is far more than the average salary comparing to most famous football players of all time.

3- Lily Cole

Lily Cole has worked with some of the most well-known brands in the world, including Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. She started her modelling career as a teenager and soon became a huge star in the fashion world.

According to the Evening Standard, Cole was discovered by Benjamin Hart (creative boss of agency Storm) while she was chatting with friends in an Old Compton Street burger bar. She initially doubted the authenticity of Hart but was soon convinced to sign for the agency. And that’s how she entered the world of fashion and soon made a big name in the industry.
