Fashion has always been an outlet for me to express myself. Growing up in Sweden I was surrounded by a lot of boys (I have three brothers) and so ended up really enjoying a lot of boyish games and activities.
I played football all through primary school, I loved going on bike rides and I would often be found climbing up a tree.
That had a lot of influence on me however when I moved to the UK when I was 6, a lot changed. I immediately felt thrust into a world of girliness, I wanted to fit into school so bad that I started to dress like the other girls, plait my hair and play with Barbie dolls.
I never truly felt comfortable and missed the tom-boy outfits my mum would dress me in so when I got to secondary school and older, I really started to experiment with fashion.
I would buy boys clothes and make them girly, wear dungarees but with a crop top and generally just had fun. I was always getting funny looks from the other girls but looking back, I was far too cool for my age and everyone was probably just jealous.
I think that really helped to shape me and my sense of style. I very much still go against the grain and do things a little different to everyone else. I don’t follow the crowd or trends and still love a Dr Martin boot.
Fashion today has become so saturated that I really never buy from the high street anymore. Especially in terms of online retailers, everything is so overdone, cheap and nasty and even though you might pay £10 for your skirt, it’s not going to last you a year let alone 5.
I buy for the future and love items that can be worn and re-worn for years to come.
There is something really special about routing through you old draws and finding gems that have come back into fashion.
Today, my fashion is still a way for me to express myself and I love experimenting, trying to styles and colours and really just having fun with it.
We’ve all gone through fashion nightmares but that is part of growing up and I think we really should embrace this and just laugh at ourselves when the time comes.
My fashion journey is documented in Living with Lindsey and I regularly post about trends, brands I’m loving and all fashion-related things.
