We all know how important it is to maintain our physical health; after all, our bodies are the most important vehicles we have! But what about taking care of our minds? Finding ways to look after our brains is one of the best things we can do to look after ourselves. Studies have indicated that at least one in four people will experience problems with their mindset during their lifetime, so making time to take care of it is as important as taking care of our physical self. With that in mind, I take a look at some of the best ways that you can start looking after your brain today.

Declutter

When you aren’t feeling at your best, it can be very hard to muster the energy to do anything at all. The thought of undertaking big tasks can be overwhelming, which is the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. However, studies have shown that clutter can exacerbate stress and lead to negative thought patterns, reduced energy, and bad moods. So, finding the energy to tackle a small corner of the home is a great start in addressing these issues and giving your brain the space it needs to balance itself.

Make healthy choices

Imbalances in the mind can often lead to bad decisions around essentials like food. It can be tempting to take solace in junk food, sugary drinks, or cigarettes when actually these types of choices can make the situation worse. Be kind to your body by eating healthy, nutritious food, staying hydrated, and avoiding stimulants like coffee and nicotine so that your body is well equipped to take care of your brain. The right foods can also boost your immune system, which is essential in helping you to feel strong and healthy.

Make time for friends

Studies have shown that being a part of a community has huge benefits for feelings of well-being. Sharing your time with people who have the same interests as you is uplifting in its own right, so try to seek out your friends or make time to engage in activities that will lead you to make new ones. Not only will this help to boost self-confidence and self-esteem, but it will also reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness that can exacerbate low moods.

The brain is a muscle and needs to be exercised in the same way the body does to keep it in tip-top condition. Word games, puzzles, and strategy-based games are perfect for this as they demand focus, analysis, and mental skills, all of which stimulate the brain and enhance the mind. Poker is an excellent example of how games can help to give your mind a boost; this is because, according to mind coach Dr. Stephen Simpson, it helps to create new neurological pathways in the brain. As you practice, these pathways are reinforced and covered with a protective layer which allows the brain to deal with more complex processing while maintaining a healthy central nervous system.

Stay active 

When you start to feel low, one of the most tempting things to do is stay in bed or slob out on the sofa. While it’s super important to listen to your body and be kind to yourself with an extra-long lie-in every now and then, making a habit out of being sedentary will only make the problem worse. Exercise has a plethora of brain-boosting benefits, including the release of happy hormones such as endorphins and serotonin which can contribute towards a more balanced mindset. 

Sleep

Good sleep helps our bodies to heal and recover from each day; it also allows our brains a chance to process all of the memories, emotions, and experiences we encountered during our waking hours. Unfortunately, sleep is also one of the first things to suffer when your mind isn’t feeling at its best. Try to pre-empt any sleep issues by maintaining the same bed and wake times every day (yes, even at the weekends!), ensuring that your body gets enough exposure to light during the day, banning electronics from the bedroom, and using a white noise machine to block out background noise. 

Taking care of your brain should be as high on your list of priorities as the weekly shopping. Of course, not every technique is going to work, but by actively taking steps towards a better state of mind, you may just help yourself to avoid any long term problems.
