Tips to Manage Irregular Bleeding

Irregular bleeding is a form of vaginal bleeding that happens outside of a woman’s regular menstrual period. Usually, periods last three to seven days after an average of 28 days. With irregular bleeding, they may be heavier than normal and more frequent. If you struggle with irregular bleeding, get help from the Chicago Center for Women’s Health as soon as possible.

Diagnosing Irregular Bleeding

When diagnosing abnormal irregular bleeding, your doctor will check for the following;

  • How often you get your menstrual periods; even when your period is not regular, the length of every cycle should not change by more than seven days. You have a problem if your cycle is over five weeks long or shorter than three weeks. 
  • You experience bleeding after intercourse
  • Usually, a period lasts four to five days. If yours lasts longer than seven days or less than two days, you may need help
  • You experience spotting between periods
  • In a normal period, you lose an average of two tablespoons of blood. If you lose more than five, it is too heavy and you need help. your doctor will ask about the number of tampons or pads that you use in a specified period

How to Manage Irregular Periods

1. Yoga

Yoga has been around for a long time and it has always been great for managing irregular bleeding. About 40 minutes of yoga five days of the week can regulate your hormones. It lowers the hormones that are linked to irregular menstruation. Yoga may also regulate the emotional symptoms of menstruation, reduce menstrual pain and improve the quality of life for women with dysmenorrhea. 

2. Increase Your Intake of Ginger 

Ginger is a simple remedy for irregular periods. Even though there is no scientific evidence to prove it, it could help you manage many period problems. It may reduce the flow for heavy bleeders and relieve the symptoms of PMS.  

3. Regular Exercise

Exercise can help you regulate irregular bleeding. It helps you achieve a healthy weight which helps with issues such as PCOS. It can help you manage primary dysmenorrhea 

4. Cinnamon

Add some cinnamon to your meals and drinks to regulate irregular bleeding. Even though there is no scientific research to support it, cinnamon is said to help with lots of menstrual issues.

5. Take Lots of Pineapples

Eating pineapples can be a remedy for irregular bleeding. It is rich in bromelain which softens the uterine lining to promote regular bleeding. It has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties that may help with period cramps

When Should You See a Doctor?

Even though home remedies can work, they are not always reliable. You should always see a doctor if you have the symptoms of irregular bleeding. Your doctor will recommend medication depending on your specific needs. Some of the most important things that they may consider include: 

  • Your eating disorders, if any 
  • Whether you are breastfeeding
  • Menopause
  • Puberty
  • PCOS 
  • Your stress levels

Do not take any medication for irregular bleeding before seeing a doctor. Different treatment options are appropriate for different people.
