Top Tips for Keeping Your Hair Healthy This Winter

Fall is ramping up with its football games, hoodies, and Halloween is just around the corner. However, after October, winter rears its head and the chilly autumn temperatures take a sudden drop in many parts of the country. So, while you’re participating in all the fun activities that the fall season brings, start preparing for the winter winds to blow as well.

From preparing your home for the winter months to making sure you stay healthy during flu season, there’s a lot to do before temperatures fall, including making sure to take care of your hair. Below, you’ll find a few tips for keeping your hair healthy this winter season to get you headed in the right direction.

Avoid Frequent Hair Washes

Although you use only organic hair products, you need to tone down how often you wash your hair in the middle of winter. Washing your hair daily strips it of natural oils that your hair desperately needs during the winter. If you typically wash your hair every day, try switching to every other day. The longer you wait between hair washes the better, in the middle of winter.

Wear a Hat

It’s super important to wear a hat in the winter months to cut down on the exposure to winter’s elements. The dry air, snow, wind, and rain rob your hair of the moisture it needs to be healthy. Winters are not the time to worry about hat hair since the dry air will cause your hair to break off. Wear a hat and be happy with it during the wintertime. To fight the static electricity that comes with wearing a hat, use a dry oil spray on your hair before donning one to go outside.

Use a Humidifier

Believe it or not, having a humidifier going in your home during the winter can help prevent the dry air from damaging your hair. Heating indoors causes the air to become super dry, which in turn affects everything from your sinuses to your hair. Invest in a humidifier, use it often, and you’ll feel better, plus your hair will be healthier as well.

Get Your Hair Trimmed Regularly

While it might be tempting to put off going to the salon until the flowers start to bloom again, it’s better for your hair if you get it trimmed regularly at this time of the year. Taking a half-inch off the bottom will not only give your hair a healthier appearance, but it’ll also help it grow better.

Take Cooler Showers

With the extreme cold outside, it’s tempting to hop into a shower that’s as hot as you can stand it to warm up. Taking cooler showers is better for your skin and your hair, however. Instead, wash your hair with water that’s lukewarm and rinse with cold water, instead of hot.

Avoid Styling with Heat

The winter air already has your hair drying out enough, you don’t want to heat style because that will dry it out even more. Heat-free drying makes your hair healthier and shiner, especially when it’s cold outside. Try washing and letting your hair dry naturally. You’ll be surprised at how much better your hair will feel when you do.

These are just a few of the best tips out there for keeping your hair healthy as you move into the winter months. Fall is all about chilly days and bonfires. Winter is about fun as well, but you need to make a few more preparations to make sure you’re able to enjoy those outdoor, cold-weather activities.
