6 Tips For New Runners

If you’re looking to start a new fitness routine to get in the best shape of your life, then running may be a great choice.

Running is one of the best ways to burn fat, increase your metabolism, and even reduce stress. 

However, in order to make the most out of your experience and avoid things going wrong, it’s essential to take a look at some of these tips before hitting the pavement! 

Avoid Traffic Areas

Ideally, you should run in places which have a dirt path, or on a treadmill.  Not only will it be much easier on your knees, but you’ll have to worry much less about oncoming traffic. The last thing that you want to worry about is getting hit by a car.  

Most people like to run with headphones on.  When you have headphones on, it’s much less likely you’ll be able to hear cars or other hazards.  However, when you’re in a controlled environment which is specifically for running, you can listen to your music without having to worry. 

Start In Small Intervals

Even though you may be excited to get started and move towards your fitness goals as quickly as possible, it’s a good idea to take it slowly in the beginning.  Give yourself plenty of time to catch your breath and recover when you need it.

Experts recommend starting in intervals of two minutes.  For two full minutes walk at a comfortable pace, and run for the next 2 minutes. Eventually, you can start increasing the length of your running intervals until you’re experienced enough to run the entire stretch. 

Go Slowly

Don’t sprint for the entirety of your workout.  You risk overexerting yourself and getting burnt out too quickly.  Start out running at a slow and comfortable speed.

You’re more likely to continue running regularly if you give your body time to slowly work its way up. 

Wear The Right Shoes

One of the best ways to hurt your knees or back is to run in the wrong kind of shoes.  You should be wearing shoes that provide enough bounce and sole support.

You may have to invest some money into a good pair; however, if you’re serious about running, it will be worth the investment. 

Hydrate!

If you’re doing it right, running should make you break a sweat.  It’s vital that you replenish the lost sweat by hydrating.

Go for your run with a bottle of water so that you can sip as you go.  You’ll be less likely to get fatigued earlier and won’t risk dehydration in warm weather. 

Don’t Forget to Stretch

Before and after going for a run, you should stretch your legs.  This will prevent pulling any muscles or straining your knees.
